Arthur and Madeline’s relationship was beautiful, and I found myself wishing that all of Arthur And Teddy Are Coming Out was about them. He has been living closeted for his whole life, and he is now 79, and he and the love of his life were forcibly separated amidst a violent homophobic incident fifty years before. However, his wife Madeleine was very interesting, but sadly her time was limited and we didn’t get anything from her point of view. Die Unterstützung, die er dabei von seiner (noch) Frau Madeleine erfährt und die Liebe, die die beiden einander entgegenbringen, hat mich teilweise zu Tränen gerührt. It’s hard to read a book when you find yourself so thoroughly at odds with almost all of it that you start to wonder if maybe it’s your beliefs about how to treat people are the ones which are wrong. This was a solid and original debut novel with some gentle humour and sweet moments, and I would happily read more from this author.

Two people at very different stages of their lives deciding to come out of the closet and live their authentic lives despite all their fears and insecurities sounded captivating. At the end, our little nepo baby oh so magnanimously turns down the job at the newspaper so that Ben can have it!

It was a brave decision to stray away from something so familiar, and in my opinion, it works really well. It feels very much like a queer book aimed at the masses that is trying to throw in so much that it doesn't do justice to any single issue and simply becomes almost like trauma porn. Arthur is 79 but has decided it is time to tell his children that he and his wife are now separated and he is gay.She made a moment of bravery and vulnerability from them all about herself, not only once but twice.

He shows that life begins at whatever age the individual chooses; that we are responsible for our own happiness and that being old doesn’t mean that life is over. Teddy will feel really familiar to a lot of young gay people I think, with his struggles to come out highlighting how hard it can still be even now.I know it's a fictional book but the kind homophobic stuff in it is horrific and should really stay in a fictional book. But this story ended up being such a mediocre slow burn, I caught myself skimming through some chapters, especially the ones about Teddy and Ben. Each chapter alternates between Arthur and Teddy's perspectives, which works well, and you get the expected range of side characters who mostly all turn out to be good people as this is meant to be a happy book (the somewhat of a villain character was very obvious from the start, as you might expect).

His grandson, Teddy, is also gay but doesn’t feel ready to come out due to the reactions following his grandfather’s coming out. CW: Suicide, threat of murder, homophobia, gaslighting, emotional abuse, toxic relationship, death of a parent, physical abuse, cancer, addiction, grief, abandonment of a child, abandonment of an elder. What follows is a wonderful read that will make you emotional as they both come to terms with who they are.

I really enjoyed this book it was so easy to read and I think it will appeal to the younger readers because it’s got a modern vibe too it. While some of the characters show bigotry towards Arthur and Teddy, most show only love, support and compassion to them as they embark on a new chapter of their lives.
