The acceptance of the Robin mantle passing from one to the next could not be clearer, and they panels on which these take place beautifully show how the end of one era has been accepted and the dawn of another era has been celebrated by the participants themselves. But, there's also issues that don't resolve in this set or are part of a crossover story, so the flow is broken up.

Starlin takes a leap to the present, aging Todd up from the thirteen-year-old he was in Collins’ origin stories to make him around 15/16 years old.The death was decided by fans, as DC Comics set up a hotline for readers to vote on as to whether or not Jason Todd should survive a potentially fatal situation. Nowhere near as weighed down by unnecessary romantic conflict like the issues before it and I loved seeing Jason's joy at being Robin. In the late 1980s, Starlin began working more for DC Comics, writing a number of Batman stories, including the four-issue miniseries Batman: The Cult (Aug. When they announced the Under the Red Hood Deluxe I was kinda hoping they’d slide in a bit of Jason’s Robin era as some extra material but sadly no. A few stories that leave unresolved cliffhangers drag down the overall quality, but the volume as a whole is enjoyable.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed it as a historical artifact, a record of what Batman comics felt like in the late 1980s before other creators like Alan Grant and Chuck Dixon became the architects of a new Batman mythos. I've heard so much about it - from other fans, as references in other comics, and in fanworks - that I felt I was doing myself a disservice by not actually reading it myself. In the mid-1970s, Starlin contributed a cache of stories to the independently published science-fiction anthology Star Reach. BATMAN – SECOND CHANCES represents a second chance for my comics stories on that character to be reappraised, and I’m pleased to have these stories gathered in one place. It’s hard to tell what Collin’s motive was when writing the character and what input the editor’s had.

Discover the origin of one of comics most controversial characters in BATMAN: SECOND CHANCES-collecting the earliest adventures of Jason Todd, the second Robin, from the minds of legendary creators Max Allan Collins, Jim Starlin, Jim Aparo, Dave Cockrum, Denys Cowan, Norm Breyfogle, Jo Duffy and more! And I have the benefit of several decades worth of hindsight and the knowledge that he will grow to be an awesome character!Robin learns of the villain’s connection to his father and goes out seeking revenge while Batman plays to the boy’s better angels and succeeds. Batman and Robin split up to nab the criminal behind the scheme to abduct the Dark Knight’s old friend.
