Description

Movement is a simple affair, there is no unit drop off or pick up, and armies must stop when in a region with the enemy. As you can see, I went all out and moved 3 armies located in three different Shires to converge on the Vikings located in one of my fallen reinforcement cities of Theodford. We also love that each faction deck has a bunch of Event cards in it that are unique to that faction.

If you are the aggressor as the Viking player, you are guaranteed to lose a Berserker if the defender rolls a hit. You have to be careful because you will not get Fyrd Cards when attacking and you have to weigh how many troops you will gain compared to how many you and the Vikings will lose. At the start of each round, a colored faction cube is drawn from the bag and placed on the next Turn space.

Games I don't think would be examples would be, for example, Root, which is a team asymmetrical war-game but doesn't have the same beer-and-pretzels feel. Speaking of combat, I do like that each faction has custom dice, not just different in color but in the symbols and number of those symbols. If units from both sides remain in the Shire, the attacking factions simultaneously roll their Battle Dice. However, in 878: Vikings, the random draw of who goes next doesn’t happen until one faction completes their turn. I hope that you have enjoyed these Action Points on this great game and I hope that you get a chance to try it out for yourself.

The defender always has the initiative and therefore gets to roll their Battle dice first, removing any casualties from the enemy force and any of their own actions as well, such as Flee or Command (where a unit can be moved to an adjacent space occupied by that factions pieces). There are a few cards that can be used to affect battles, making it so you don’t always know what to expect when initiating combat. I just always find myself with them spread too thin and have had more than one turn where the Berserker faction could do nothing because they were all wiped out after a back-to-back English conquest to retake Shires. The board populates with the Housecarl and Thegn units as shown on the board in the small circled spots. Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games! When both factions of a side (English or Viking) have played their truce cards, the game will end on that round!
