Description

In the beginning, the Wars of the Roses was nothing but feuds between families to determine who should be taking care of the sick King Henry VI.

His Lancastrian queen, Margaret of Anjou, rides south with an army of victorious northerners, accompanied by painted warriors from the Scottish Highlands. He throws into the bargain England’s two French possessions, Anjou and Maine, and an offer for Henry to marry the French King’s (Charles VII) niece, Margaret of Anjou. With a background in English too, he has a handling of the craft quite unlike any other, knowing and understanding exactly what it is that his readers are looking for. I suppose I ought to say that this review will contain spoilers, just in case anyone doesn’t know how the Wars of the Roses turned out. Even if you are normally more of a Fantasy fan, you may still enjoy this book as this period is famously one of the main inspirations for George R.

Fine condition used Oct 2013 Exclusive Signed First Edition/ First Print Hardback with intact unclipped Dust Jacket. The marriage will go ahead and all we need to do now is mention casually to the English living in Maine and Anjou that their service is no longer appreciated by the Crown. So who better to reveal the dynastic murderous feuds than the man who brought the Mongol and Roman empires to life?

Although generally accurate the author takes artistic license to move the story along when required and obviously adds his own interpretation to the motives and personalities of the principle characters. If all the incidences of this type of story fat were removed, the novel would be about 200 pages thinner. I do miss the camaraderie of the smokers’ room, as well as the lessons where their faces lit up as they understood what I was wittering on about. As a positive point, though, I'd mention the side plot of the Maine settlers' rebellion, when as a result of the Henry VI/Margaret of Anjou marital alliance, the territories of Anjou and Maine are handed back to France. Winter 1461 – Richard Duke of York is dead, his ambitions in ruins, his head spiked on the walls of York city.
