Very hard to read and get into when the first page of every chapter is missing I put if off as a mistake for first chapter and second but as I got more into the story it was harder cause I could be missing something. She's definitely worth reading about - she's strong throughout the book and her background made me empathetic towards her and angry for her but there were some places where she was a bit unkind towards the MMC. I could get pickier but I hadn’t even made it halfway before I grew bored and annoyed with our lead. After centuries of being the fae Mother’s most trusted assassin, Creon’s reputation is well-deserved. Alongside the love story, Creon and Emelin are in a dangerous situation, facing many enemies, and if anyone uncovers their plan it will mean instant death for both of them.

That being said, if you haven’t read this series yet, the very beginning of both books takes a brief minute before you get into it.When a character can’t speak you need your narrator to include more observations or content to balance things out. The people of Japan believe that everyone has an ikigai - a reason for being; the thing that gets you out of bed each morning. Creon believes that the key to his mother’s magic is her throne, so he and Em try to map the labyrinth underneath the palace to get under the throne to destroy it from there. The first book is more of a slow burn but by the 3/4 mark it ignites and gets even better (and more frequent) in book two. All these creatures: fae, demons, gods, alves, pheonixes, vampires and nymphs - with their own kind of magic. It had a promising premise, but the tedious writing and poor execution made it impossible for me to become engaged in the story or care about the characters despite my best efforts. colour-based magic system as we learn alongside Emelin how it works, uncover more of the mysterious and deadly Mother's origins, and meet even more magical species. Now Caine delves into the real stories behind the gangs we think we know so well, revealing the hidden realities behind the myths. And I loved watching him fall for Emelin, feeling things for the very first time, and bravely embracing it.

he has everything I want in my MMC (except , like I said , the side « touch her and died ») but he is broken, scarred, beautiful. In the absolutely packed Act II, the dark fantasy resumes and the Sandman expands into the French Revolution, ancient Rome, 19th-century San Francisco, eighth-century Baghdad, and beyond. Beautifully complex and very much morally grey - if only his character was given more time to open up.

This novel is described on Goodreads as a “steamy assassin fantasy romance” with enemies-to-lovers and grumpy/sunshine tropes. The story starts in Cathra, a human island that has recently installed an iron ward and believes itself to be freed of the Fae dominion. Although I found it a tad long, the plot never really dragged and I immediately picked up the second book in the series. Emelin is very smart and determined and I love that she talks back, evil though he could kill her with his pinky. There's a reason We Are Legion was named Audible's Best Science Fiction Book of 2016: Its irresistibly irreverent wit!
