Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic gave the album three out of five stars, criticizing Urban's attempt to address complicated sexual politics. Maybe if he’d made his name with said guitar skills instead of with his musical mystery meat that he mischaracterizes as country, he wouldn’t catch so much crap from so many of us. But, I agree with Trigger’s main point…it’s silly to see a 50 year old guy writing/singing this type of material. Keith Urban has spent the past several years cementing his role as one of country music’s most genre-flexible veterans, teaming up with everyone from Pitbull to Kanye producer Jeff Bhasker on his 2016 smash Ripcord. I couldn’t believe I actually found 3 songs of his from the past 5 years that I don’t mind listening to.

Perhaps predictably, the well-intentioned song was met with both praise and criticism in a country ecosystem that is struggling to support and sustain its female entertainers. The lyric for much contemporary fare has thin to no narrative and tells us nothing about country or very much HUMAN experience beyond drinking and hooking up ( Urban , Hunt , Bryan and many others ). In a time when most music is thoughtless, incoherent rambling, Keith Urban puts his heart and soul into his music.Drinking and hooking up lyrics have been rampant in traditional country music since country music began. But, more importantly, your scenario of Keith having a sudden realization that this is crap is never going to happen because Keith is the “creative” force behind all of it.

This decision doesn’t have to be at the expense of commercial aptitude as some in the music industry love to portray. He knows better, he’s talented, he’s older, he’s a statesman in the genre, and that’s why his current output is so extravagantly pathetic. Not all Africans are blacks, nor their ancestors, and they are not all Americans, talking about any of the 35 countries that do make the American continents as a whole, sole and unique America.

Throughout Graffiti U, the production feels fresh and innovative, even if Urban’s creativity occasionally takes things perhaps a little too far; the choruses of ‘Drop Top’ (a propulsive, EDM-influenced ode to free-spirited partying) and ‘Love the Way It Hurts (So Good)’ are both somewhat counter-intuitive, to the extent that both songs each feel like the product of two separate songs which have somehow collided. And that is where I think Keith has changed in an attempt to, like you said, potray this youthful living on the edge image to try to speak to that demographic. Many folks are ‘conditioned ‘ to accept this sub-par pop as country music and have lost perspective . Graffiti U is neither a song title nor a lyric on the record, but rather a phrase that Urban had come up with.
