Both fanciful and farcical , this is a book that makes you both laugh and cry, “My Grandmother sends her regards and apologises” is highly recommended! She would be introduced to the real people who were characters in the fairy tales, and who would open up a big world of possibilities to the seven-year-old heartbroken little girl. Laura's Little Book Blog * The author's lightness of touch is definitely a contributor towards the novel's success. It is a story about life and death and one of the most important human rights: the right to be different. I appreciated the viewpoint of our precocious little protagonist at times, but most often found it frustrating.

That said, I will add that there are so many great fairytale characters used as metaphor, it's without doubt one Backman's best! Now, aging and eccentric she makes up fairy tales to entertain and to teach her beloved granddaughter. Her grandmother's letters lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and totally ordinary old crones-but also to the truth about fairytales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other. The redundancies alternate between being humorous and reinforcing thematic textual points, and sometimes they do both at the same time. Wading through this motley hoard of people, Elsa embarks on a voyage of her own, fumbling on realities at every step and growing wiser with every revelation. But, when her grandmother dies, Elsa is left to cope with her parent’s divorce, her mother’s pregnancy, and her issues at school without her staunch supporter. She worried when Granny died that she might never get to visit The Land Of Almost-Awake ever again, but maybe she’s been living in it all along. Elsa does not understand as Granny is her only friend, but they both love treasure hunts so she agrees. Elsa loves to read books, especially the Harry Potter series, but Granny’s stories were special because Elsa believed that they were hers. When Elsa’s grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsa’s greatest adventure begins.

Through Elsa's eyes, and her grandmother's imagination, we learn some history and some current happenings that tie everything together. When Elsa’s parents divorced it was Granny who showed her how to deal with the nightmares by telling her fairy stories. Elsa comes to realise how each individual was a part of her grandmother's story and how each in their way is a friend to Elsa even when it may not appear so at the beginning. The author has cleverly , actually very creatively, woven their stories together and we learn that they have more in common than the same address .Yet they are each other’s favorite person – always on each other’s side even when they are in the wrong. She has a habit of correcting others' grammar, is smart for her age, and is especially close with her grandmother (Granny). In My Grandmother Asked me to Tell You She's Sorry, Backman weaves a creative tapestry of the ordinary together with the extraordinary.
