I knew there was one more thing I could give myself (as at this point I still didn’t really truly know what had happened or who to believe) and to the reader, that would absolutely make sense of everything at the same time as turning everything on its head, and so when I wrote that epilogue and saw what had really happened through the lens of Josie’s warped and broken mind, I was as shocked as I expect my readers to be. The premise of this one had me really looking forward to it – a strange woman befriends a podcaster and drags her into her strange, dark world. Slowly she starts to realize that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home. Jewell has a way of putting the reader in a position where you don’t really know whom you can trust. You know bad shit has happened from the start, maybe reeeaaaaalllly bad shit, but I didn't have a clue what, exactly, had gone down, and I was desperate to find out.

This involvement escalates to stalking, stealing items from Alix's house, lurking around, critiquing her marriage, and manipulating her by portraying Alix's husband as worse than her own. You know something isn’t quite right, there are red herrings making feel uncomfortable inside, but you want to dive into the murky water to see the creatures lurking there. In this edgy thriller from bestseller Jewell ( The Family Remains), meek housewife Josie Fair and true crime podcaster Alix Summers meet by chance in a pub where both are celebrating their 45th birthdays. None of This is True is a psychological thriller about two women who, through a chance encounter, learn they are birthday twins. It doesn't end there, these two women seemingly share frustrations with each of their respective partners.

Q: Readers will be shocked by the twists and turns of this plot; did any elements surprise you while you were writing it?

It gives away some interesting snippets about the parts of the story you have just read and puts them in wider context, such as Alix discussing her thoughts about Josie’s revelations. With her dream home and two lovely children, Alix is happily married, yet recent issues in her marriage leave her seeking a distraction. Two women living two totally different and separate lives are brought together in a pub on the same night because they share the same birthday. but… there’s something about Josie… 🤔…something bizarre…she wears denim… ALL the time… heck her curtains are denim… look 👀. The atmosphere of the novel, set mostly on this wild Greek island, echoes strongly the classical tragedies of Greece.

If I had my MSW daughter read this she would say Josie's actions throughout the book all stemmed from that unresolved trauma and she wouldn't be wrong. I also enjoy more analysis when taking on difficult subjects and wanted a better ending for Roxy and Erin. This unsettling encounter unveils a darker side to Josie, revealing not only her controlling nature but also a high level of manipulation. She wears wide-legged trousers and a top made of two pieces of black cloth held together with laces at the sides. It was actually a relatively late addition to the book, when I realized that the tension was building in an incredibly quiet and slow burn way and I realized my readers would need something to make them fear for the outcome, and I suddenly pictured Josie’s neighbor sitting on a chair in a TV studio talking about her impressions of Josie and Walter and realized that that was the way to do it. Josie is curious to know more about Alix and looks her up on the internet and finds out that Alix is a popular podcaster known for sharing the stories of strong women who have overcome the odds to exact positive change in their lives. Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. British podcaster Alix Summers meets mousy Josie Fair while they are both out celebrating their 45th birthdays at a local pub.

Alix is a podcaster of some renown, but now her series of podcasts has come to an end and she wants to start something a little different.

and that unsettling, insidious fear of “letting the wrong person in” did underscore the book as I was writing it, definitely. Nevertheless, I was excited to get to the bottom of things and had a hard time stopping myself from extrapolating endlessly as the novel wore on, with theory after theory about all of the players involved.
