Here’s three images I took of a simple macro still life arrangement using the EM10 Mark III and the Olympus 14-42mm kit zoom at 42mm. As before you can adjust the size of a manually-selected AF area if desired, on the EM10 III between 3x, 5x, 7x, 10x or 14x. I generally preferred using the 7x and 10x options for accuracy. We were only able to test the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV with the 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ lens, which, while very capable, doesn’t have a particularly wide maximum aperture. However, the Mark IV features in-body 5-axis image stabilization with up to 4.5 EV steps of compensation (which is a slight improvement on the Mark III’s 4 EV steps), which meant that even images shot in low light with a slower shutter speed still came out sharp. The OM System OM-10 is the next camera expected to be announced. Following the transmogrification of the Olympus OM-D EM-1 and E-M5 to the OM System OM-1 and OM-5, now it's the turn of the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV to be reborn. What makes the Olympus cameras even more unique though are their Live Bulb and Live Time options which let you take regular peeks at the exposure on the screen as it builds-up to see how it’s getting on. This lets you stop the exposure early if it’s already perfect, or perhaps not going to work out. The interval between updates can be set to 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30 or 60 seconds, and the maximum number of peeks depends on the ISO value: 9, 14, 19 or 24 times for ISOs of 1600, 800, 400 or Low respectively. Once you’ve used up your allocation of peeks, there’ll be no more, regardless of the exposure length. You can find the options to configure this in Custom section D2.

I’m scratching my head. I always thought that being mirror-less means that it is always possible to shoot in silent mode unless manufacturers put in a fake shutter sound. The 3.0-inch LCD touchscreen is the most ambitious of the series so far. This time, the E-M10 IV’s screen tilts upwards 90-degrees for shooting at hip level, and also flips downwards 180-degrees in the other direction. This positions it under the camera for selfies and vlogging. It’s good to see more flexibility introduced, but it does present a potential issue for people who want to self-shoot while using the camera on a tripod. Like the Mark II before it though, the EM10 Mark III feels a lot more solid and comfortable than you’d expect for a camera of its size and mid-range positioning. There’s no formal weather-sealing nor tough credentials at this price, but the EM10 Mark III’s build quality feels very solid, dense and reassuring in your hands, and the slightly enlarged grip allows you to hold it securely and comfortably.The E-M10 Mark IV can also use its excellent 5-axis sensor-shift image stabiliser when shooting movies, which translates into very smooth hand-held footage, even when using longer telephoto lenses. Olympus has also overhauled the E-M10 Mark III's camera-assist shooting modes. iAuto mode becomes simply Auto, and promises to deliver sharper images in all scenarios, while the Scene (SCN) mode has been upgraded. Either way, OM Digital said that the PEN line is alive. And in fact, the E-P7 was the first camera released under the new ownership. We wouldn't be at all surprised to see an OM System E-P8 or an OM System E-PL11 –or even to see them receive new names. The OM System verdict The rear screen can now be tilted down by 180-degrees to face forwards when holding the camera in selfie mode, which makes it a lot more suitable for vlogging.

To find out I mounted an unstabilised 25mm prime lens (with an effective focal length of 50mm). According to photographic wisdom, this would normally require a shutter speed of at least 1/50 for handholding without camera shake. When OM Digital confirmed that the PEN camera line would continue, it reigntied the torches of those questing for the Olympus Holy Grail: the PEN-F II. The original Olympus PEN F was discontinued years ago, but was so beloved and coveted that it has become a cult classic. On top is a vacant flash hotshoe that sits directly above the lens, with a clever Off / On / Flash Up switch and a Shortcut button on the left hand-side when viewed from the rear. The Off / On / Flash Up switch is much more convenient than the On-Off switch on the original E-M10, with a further push from the On position to Flash Up doing exactly what you'd expect - very neat.

The E-M10 IV's 2.36m-dot OLED viewfinder, unchanged from the previous model, provides a clear view of the scene ahead with settings overlaid on top. This means that once you’re familiar with the layout, you won’t need to take your eye away from the viewfinder to make adjustments. Remote control: optional (RM-UC1 Remote Cable) or via built-in Wifi and Olympus smartphone application The AF targeting pad feature allows you to move the focus point around the touchscreen using a finger whilst holding the camera up to your eye, which is very similar to Panasonic's Touchpad AF feature. The number of selectable contrast AF points is the same 121 in a 11x11 grid. Low-light auto focus continues to be excellent – the system managed to focus down to -2EV (as long as there was something to focus on) even without the use of the focus assist lamp. This is seriously low light, about the same as a landscape lit only by moonlight and nothing else. It can also serve as an AF assist light or as a controller for wirelessly slaved FL-36R or FL-50R units.

Switch the power on and the lens extends by a couple of centimetres with the camera ready for action in less than two seconds; it’s actually not much different to the cold power-up time with a prime or non-collapsing zoom. The zoom operation on the lens is motorised only, using a spring-loaded ring on the barrel – it’s not as tactile as a mechanically-linked ring, but that’s the price of miniaturisation. Meanwhile a thin ring at the end offers manual focusing and while it’s narrow, the damping makes it a lot more usable than the loose ring on the Sony 16-50mm kit zoom. The feature set of the mirrorless E-M10 is very impressive. It contains some of the top spec technology featured in the OM-D range, and this puts it on a par with recently launched and similarly priced DSLRs. The launch of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III has reinvigorated the Olympus mirrorless camera range and made the choices for photographers a lot clearer. It offers high-end tools and features in an exciting mid-price camera that’s also very compact. While the E-M10 II is generally very responsive, I had an occasional problem – as with the E-M5 Mark II – where pressing the info button didn’t actually toggle through all the options, skipping the histogram and level views. Unusually, the E-M10’s raw files have a lower dynamic range than simultaneously captured JPEGs. Performing a bespoke conversion is likely to draw more information out of the file. Olympus OM-D E-M10 II verdictNone can match its 8fps burst mode shooting and only the 100D and Nikon’s D5300 equal the resolution of the E-M10’s LCD screen. The Micro Four Thirds mount gives the OMD EM10 Mark III access to the broadest and most established native lens catalogue of all the mirrorless camera systems. Micro Four Thirds has over 75 lenses available from Panasonic and Olympus along with third parties including Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, Voigtlander and others. So while many rival mirror-less formats are only now beginning to cover most bases with a single lens, Micro Four Thirds typically has two or more options available. If we had any criticisms, it would be that we’d love to see a mic port to go along with the 4K video capabilities and flip down screen. However, this would likely start to step on the toes of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 line, so we can understand why Olympus didn’t include this on their entry-level camera. There are 9 ISO settings available on the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV. The base sensitivity is ISO 200, but there is an expanded low sensitivity setting equivalent to ISO 100. These crops demonstrate the image quality at each setting. JPEG The good news is that these menus are mainly there to allow you to set up the camera exactly the way you want it to be set up – once you're done with that, you'll seldom need to delve into the menus again, courtesy of the large number of external controls as well as the excellent Super Control Panel, which is basically an interactive status display inherited from older Olympus cameras.The move to a 20.3MP sensor has definitely given the E-M10 IV an advantage over its predecessor when it comes to resolving fine detail, and the new Olympus is even able to equal the 24MP Fujifilm X-T200 for detail capture at lower sensitivities. However, the E-M10 IV's smaller sensor and lower megapixel count can't match the image clarity from the Sony and Fujifilm cameras at higher ISOs. I really like how this button provides access to additional options, depending on the mode. It works particularly well in Auto with the Shooting Tips, but is also a handy way of accessing the Super Control Panel in PASM modes, while leaving the OK button to access the simpler options strip down the right side of the screen. These may all be subtle changes to the user interface, but make a big difference in day-to-day operation, especially for the target market.
